I stood alone in the ruins of Hampi, India at sunrise. The boulders glowed orange. A temple elephant walked past. No crowds. No ticket lines. Just me and 14th-century history. Later that day, I met three other travelers. Total. That’s underrated. That’s what I search for now — the places that haven’t been optimized for Instagram yet.
The Faroe Islands: Nordic Without the Crowds
Everyone goes to Iceland. The Faroes are two hours north, equally dramatic, and empty.
I hiked to the village of Gásadalur. Population: maybe 20. The waterfall drops straight into the ocean. The grass roofs are real. The sheep outnumber people.
Weather changes fast. Fog rolls in. Sun breaks through. Rainbows appear. The light is impossible. Photographers come here for a reason. But it’s still not crowded. Because it’s hard to get to. Because the weather is unpredictable. Because there’s no nightlife.
Tbilisi, Georgia: The Crossroads Nobody Talks About
Not the Georgia with peaches. The one between Russia and Turkey. A city with sulfur bathhouses, cliffside architecture, and wine traditions older than most countries.
I soaked in a bathhouse built in the 17th century. Ate khinkali dumplings that I still dream about. Drank wine made in clay vessels buried underground. The method is 8,000 years old. The taste is unlike anything from Napa.
The old town is a maze of balconies, courtyards, and hidden staircases. I got lost daily. It was the best part.
The Azores, Portugal: Hawaii of the Atlantic
Volcanic islands. Hot springs. Green lakes. Whales offshore. And most Americans have never heard of them.
I visited São Miguel. Drove crater roads. Swam in thermal pools. Ate cozido, a stew cooked underground by volcanic heat. The landscape is Jurassic. The pace is slow.
Direct flights from Boston and New York exist now. But the Azores still feel undiscovered. Go before that changes.
Slovenia: The Whole Country
Lake Bled gets some attention. The rest of Slovenia? Ignored.
I road-tripped the country in a week. Caves with underground rivers. Alpine valleys with cheese farms. A coastline that’s Italian without the prices. Ljubljana is the cutest capital in Europe. Fight me.
The Soca River is turquoise. Actually turquoise. I rafted it. Hiked alongside it. The water color doesn’t make sense until you see it.
The Honest Truth
Underrated doesn’t mean undiscovered. It means underappreciated by your crowd. The locals know. The regional travelers know. You just haven’t heard yet.
That’s the opportunity. Go before the algorithms find it. Before the crowds arrive. While it’s still real.
